What does color ePaper mean?

It means a reflective electronic-paper panel can show color without working like a backlit LCD. It does not name one color system. E Ink has several families built for different uses, and the artwork can look different on each.

E Ink describes Spectra 6 as a color platform for signage and posters. Its Gallery and Advanced Color ePaper family is designed to create full color at each pixel. A product using one family should not inherit the specifications or sample images of another.

Proof your art on the panel

Export a sample at the exact native dimensions of the display. Check the crop, gradients, skin tones if your work uses them, and dark details under the lighting where the art will hang. A phone or laptop preview cannot settle the question because it uses a different kind of screen.

Ask for an unretouched photo of the actual product showing your own sample when an in-person proof is impossible. Also ask how the product processes color and whether you can control that processing.

Questions before you buy

• Which panel family and exact model are inside the finished product?
• What is the native resolution and aspect ratio for the artwork file?
• How long does a full image update take on that product, and how often will you update it?
• Does the finished unit include a front light, controller, network connection, frame, and mounting hardware?
• What are the complete device power and maintenance requirements?

Where color ePaper fits

It is most interesting when a still image should live in a space without becoming a glowing screen. For fast motion, video, or a bright display that must look the same in every lighting condition, compare an LCD option as well. For a gallery wall, proof several works before ordering several frames.
