E Ink Art Frame

An E Ink art frame keeps still artwork visible on a reflective panel. Compare the actual frame by its panel, image workflow, lighting, mounting, and complete device power.

What is an E Ink art frame?

It is a frame built around an electronic-paper panel. The panel holds a still image after an update and reflects the light in the room. The result can sit beside printed art without the glow of an ordinary screen.

The panel is only one part of the product. A frame may also have a controller, wireless connection, storage, battery, or front light. Those parts determine how you load art and how much power the complete device uses.

Match the frame to your art

Start with the image you want to show, not a generic product photo. Ask for the native pixel dimensions and aspect ratio. Test a crop at those dimensions, then look at fine lines, shadows, and subtle gradients on the actual display.

If color matters, find out which color ePaper family the product uses. A grayscale panel, a limited-palette signage panel, and a full-color art panel will not give the same result.

Check the complete product

  • How does artwork get onto the frame: cable, card, app, or network? Can you update it without a subscription?
  • Does it need room light, or does it include a front light? How does the art look at night?
  • What are the outer dimensions, weight, mounting points, cable route, and service access?
  • What are the measured active and standby power ratings for the whole frame, not only the panel?

When is another display a better fit?

If you need video, rapid slideshows, a bright image in a dark room, or exact photographic color, an LCD photo frame may be the easier choice. If you want a still work that feels closer to a print, E Ink is worth seeing in person before you buy.
